Lighting in Dark Skies is also important, it shows the significance of characters and sometimes leads the audience away from the protagonist so they get thrill from the conclusion of the film. Below is shown a shot of the film where lighting and costume play a very significant role. The red t-shirt on the little boy hints at danger and warning and the lighting is focusing on him rather than his mother who is comforting him.
Furthermore, the below photograph displays light and shadow. The fact that the little boy's face is almost all in the light and that he is looking straight at it hints that he, in fact, is not the one in trouble. He is just an innocent participant of the movie. Whereas, the eldest boy is seen to be holding and comforting the youngest. Also, the front of his face is in the shadow hinting to the audience that he is "blinded" by something or that he, nor anyone else, can see what is going to happen to him.
The positioning of the characters also displays significance. The youngest child is almost seen at the edge of the shot. This displays insignificance to the antagonist and that someone/something more important is their focus.
